The Obverse also pictures (under the building) portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in an oval with a crown above situated between 2 cherubs. In the sky above is written "The building at London for the International Exhibition 1851". Under the bottom edge of the building is written in small letters "J Paxton Esq: Architect" and "Allen & Moore". Reverse: Around the edge is written "There are 2,244 Iron Girders, 2,200 Columns, 202 Miles of Sash Bars, and 900,000 Sup: Ft. of Glass". In the center is written "The Materials are Iron and Glass; It is in Shape a Parallelogram, 1848 Ft. Long by 408 Ft. Broad, and 66 Ft. High; It is Crossed Midway by a Transept 108 Ft. High; On the North Side is an Addition, of 956 Ft. in Length by 48 Ft. in Breadth, Total Area of Space, 855,560 Cubic Ft., or Nearly 21 Acres. Estimated Value, £ 150,000". Size: 1 3/4" diameter. | Book, "An Account of the Proceedings at the dinner given by Mr. George Peabody to the Americans connected with the Great Exhibition at the London Coffe House, Ludgate Hill on the 27th October 1851". This is a 114 page book that was "Printed for Private Distribution". The first 70 pages recounts the dinner event. The last 44 pages are an appendix and includes newspaper stories and the "Speech of Mr. Paxton at Derby, Aug. 6, 1851 at a Dinner given to himself." (He was the architect of the Crystal Palace). A very interesting read a rare book. Size: 8 13/16" high by 5 7/8" wide by 5/8" thick. Condition: The book is solid with only some wear on the edge of the binding, however many of the pages contain brown spots. | $ 70 |
